Elaine Mackey of Carroll formerly of Fonda

Elaine Mackey, 87 of Carroll, and formerly of Fonda, died Friday, April 19, 2024, at Addington Place of Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Paul Nguyen.  Music will be by Randy Schmitt and Sally Stumpf.  Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Evan Mackey.  Gift Bearers will be Duane and Betty Kirsch.  Eucharistic Minister will be Braden Mackey.  Casket Bearers will be Steve Elzenga, Scott Elzenga, Rick Elzenga, Bill Mackey, Dennis Wadle, and Dean Lange.  Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Elaine Mackey was born April 5, 1937, in Rock Rapids, Iowa to John and Hazel (Pals) Elzenga.  She attended rural country grade school and graduated in 1955 from Rock Rapids High School.  Elaine attended Westmar College and received her two-year teaching certificate.  She later attended Buena Vista College receiving a bachelor’s degree in teaching. Elaine began her teaching career in Aurelia, and then later worked in Sheldon and Storm Lake school districts.

Elaine was united in marriage to Gene Mackey at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina on December 29, 1962.  The couple established their home in the Varina area and later moved to the Fonda area where Gene farmed, and Elaine worked as a teacher for nearly thirty years in the Newell school district.  In 2011, the couple moved to Fort Dodge and in 2019 Elaine moved to Addington Place in Carroll where she resided until her passing.

Elaine enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers and baking.  Elaine loved holidays and decorated for every occasion and season and enjoyed going to garage sales searching for decorations.  Elaine and Gene enjoyed traveling with their camper and also enjoyed going on bus tours.  Elaine liked watching sports and cheering on the Hawkeyes and Chiefs. Family was very important to Elaine, and she treasured the time together with her family and grandchildren.

Elaine had deep devotion to her faith and was a long-time member of St. Columbkille, Varina; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Fonda; and Holy Trinity, Fort Dodge; she was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America.

Elaine is survived by her son, Brian Mackey and his wife Tracy of Omaha, Nebraska, grandchildren Braden & Evan Mackey.  Her brother Roger & wife Chris Elzenga of Bismarck, North Dakota, sister-in law Judy Nissen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and sister- in-law Shirley Mackey of Laurens, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.  Elaine was preceded in death by her husband Gene in 2015, her parents John and Hazel Elzenga, and brother Gordon Elzenga.
