Leonard Grote of Breda

Leonard Grote, 86 of Breda, died late Friday evening, June 21, 2024, at his home in Breda, Iowa.  A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to anyone in need.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Terry Roder.  Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir.  Gift Bearers will be Leonard’s granddaughters, Antonia and Bernadette Venturi.  Eucharistic Minister will be David Grote.  Casket Bearers will be David Grote, John Grote, Don Grote, Louis Grote, Ron Grote, and Bob Grote.  Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Breda.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Bernard’s Church in Breda with a rosary at 7 p.m.   Additional visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.

Leonard was born on July 11, 1937, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa to Herman, Jr and Louise (Janning) Grote.  Leonard attended St. Bernard School in Breda and after the death of his parents assisted his family with their farm operation.  On June 19, 1965, Leonard was united in marriage to Jean Bird at St. Martin Catholic Church in Odebolt.  Leonard and Jean made their home southwest of Breda where he was engaged in grain and livestock farming.  In the fall of 2007, they moved to their home in Breda.

Over the years Leonard was active with the St. Bernard Catholic Church, Christ the King school board, Catholic Order of Foresters, Director with Carroll County Farm Bureau, he served as a Eucharist Minister, Rosary Leader, and for many years as Sacristan at St. Bernard Church.

As a former farmer, Leonard continued to enjoy watching changing weather patterns, spend time on the computer checking the news, car shopping online, challenging himself with Sudoku, selling parish raffle tickets and any chance to talk with people about their family background.

Leonard is survived by his wife Jean of 59 years, their children Pamela Venturi and Steven Grote, their five grandchildren Antonia, Bernadette, Nicodemus, Maria Paola, and Kateri Venturi, brother Joseph (Donna) of Carroll, and sister-in-law Charla Grote of Farnhamville.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Herman, Jr and Louise Grote, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Vincent and Leona Bird, his brothers Vernon, Elmer, Erwin and Louis, and sisters-in-law Winona and Lois.
