The Carroll Fire Department was dispatched to the Carroll County Landfill at approximately 11:45 pm on Wednesday night. Fire Chief Greg Schreck says a small fire had broken out at the landfill, but employees had pretty much gotten it under control by the time the fire crew arrived. Firefighters did douse the burning debris with water while landfill crews covered the area with dirt. The Fire Department was on the scene for just under a half hour.
Schreck says the cause of the fire is unknown, but it is possible that charcoal, the discarded remains of a campfire, or other combustible material thrown out in the trash could have started the fire. With high wind speeds Wednesday night Schreck adds that the fire could have easily accelerated into something much larger, but thankfully it was brought under control swiftly. Aviation officials at Arthur N. Neu Municipal Airport in Carroll reported gusting winds reaching 39 mph around midnight with constant wind speeds hovering at 23 mph.
