Indoor Pool Expansion Proposed For Carroll Rec Center

Carroll’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Jack Wardell, presented a plan to the Carroll City Council at Monday night’s meeting for renovations and additions to the indoor pool at the Rec Center. The layout was developed by Waters Edge Aquatic Design of Lenexa, Kan., and Wardell said they did a great job of incorporating the needs identified by a group comprised of members of the Rec Center board, the City Council, swim teams and clubs along with the general public.

Other needs identified include more seating for swim team meets, zero-depth entry and features designed for young children up through teenagers. They want more hours for sauna and a proposed steam room along with additional separate space for swim meets, pool parties, training and an office. The goal is to appeal to families as well as the competitors and fitness groups.

To meet that goal, the space is designed with splash and shallow play areas, an underwater bubbler, a water slide and a current channel in a separate space from the six-lane pool and deep swim area. This layout would allow for the sauna, steam room and splash area to be open additional hours, but Wardell said some concessions would have to be made for the best utilization of available space.

The proposed layout is estimated to cost $4,955,028. Wardell said they will be contacting Waters Edge about whether or not that estimate includes the actual construction of the addition. Council member Jerry Fleshner questioned the impact on staffing, and Wardell indicated they would likely need to double the lifeguards from two to four. The council accepted the layout of the indoor pool addition for consideration and further discussion during their August planning session. A copy of proposal can be found below.
