Gary Richard Brown of Carroll

Gary Richard Brown, age 76, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at the Carroll Football Stadium with Pastor Ralph Harmon of Berean Baptist Church in Boone officiating.  Casket bearers will be Trent Brown, Skip Winey, Caleb Winey, Ethan Winey, Dylan Winey, and Garrett Winey.  Honorary casket bearers will be Andrew Brown, Adam Brown, and Isaac Winey.
A graveside service will held at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
A visitation and viewing, without the family present, will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Friday, August 14, 2020, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
Those in attendance at Gary’s services are asked to abide by Covid-19 social distancing guidelines, and masks are recommended.

Gary was born on February 19, 1944, in Charleston, West Virginia.  He was the son of John Thomas and Annie Pearl (Brown) Brown. He attended school in Charleston and Harrisville, West Virginia. After graduating high school, he moved to Hyattsville, Maryland, to work for Geico.  While working at Geico, Gary met the love of his life, Donna Majerus. They were married on May 26, 1965, at First Baptist Church in Silver Springs, Maryland. Following their marriage, they moved to Harlan, Iowa. There, Gary began his grocery career starting with Super Value which was then bought by Hy-Vee.  The Brown’s moved to Carroll in 1982 and Gary became the assistant manager of the Carroll Hy-Vee. On January 21, 2020, Gary celebrated working for Hy-Vee for 50 years.  He was always known for his helpful smile and friendly wit.
In his spare time, Gary enjoyed working in the yard and planting flowers. He also enjoyed spending time in his workshop and remodeling his home. He and Donna enjoyed decorating for the holidays especially at Christmas for all to enjoy. He was known for winning the Christmas decorating contest many years. He loved people and enjoyed spending time with family, especially attending his grandkids’ events.
Gary is survived by his wife Donna of Carroll; his children: Todd (Debbie) Brown of Lebanon, Indiana; Tiffany (Skip) Winey of Perry, Iowa; daughter-in-law Michelle Brown of Le Mars, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; Trent (Mariah) Brown of LeMars, Iowa; Megan (Nicholas) Taph of McCook Lake, South Dakota, Miranda (Josh) DeLarm of Boone, Iowa, Madilyn (Logan) Brown of Moville, Iowa, Meredith Brown of LeMars, Iowa, Bethany (Matt) McKinsey of Lebanon, Indiana, Andrew, Hannah, and Adam Brown all of Lebanon, Indiana, Caleb, Ethan, Dylan, Garett, and Isaac Winey of Perry, Iowa; 9 great-grandchildren: Maxwell, Alice, Melody, Norah, Emmet, MaKena, Leo, and Evelyn; Gary’s siblings: Francis (Gilbert) Bohanan of Harrisville, West Virginia, Jack (Shirley) Brown Harrisville, West Virginia, Judy Howard Smithsburg, Maryland, and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents John and Annie Brown; his mother and father-in-law Anthony and Lillian Majerus; his brother Charles Brown; a daughter Tamara Brown in infancy; and son Troy Brown in 2020; his sister-in-law Linda Kaufman; and his brothers-in-law Alvin Eshelman, Bill Peterson, and John Howard.
