Old electronics causing clutter? Bring them to the Carroll E-Cycling Event

The 2015 E-Cycling Event will take place this Saturday morning, September 19, at the Pella Corporation in Carroll. Mary Wittry with the Carroll County Solid Waste Management Commission says she’s expecting another large turnout this year.

So last year was the first annual, this is the 2nd annual. I don’t know how long it will continue but as you can tell from how fast and furious last year was there was certainly a need and I’m expecting it to be that busy again this year.

Last year’s turnout saw a lot of electronics dropped off for recycling.

We had 417 vehicles attended the event, and we collected 60 tons of materials.

This year Carroll County residents can bring their old electronics to Pella Corporation’s Southwest Loading area from 7:30 am to 10:30 am. There is no charge for the service, but they are accepting non-perishable food items to benefit the Carroll County Food Pantry. Wittry explains what types of electronic waste will be accepted.

On Saturday we are going to be accepting all sizes and types of: TVs, computers monitors, hard drives, keyboards, the mouse, printers, fax machines, cell phones and stereos. We will not be accepting any appliances such as refrigerators, washer and dryers anything like that this is all about electronics.

Volunteers are still needed to help unload vehicle contents into the trucks, and early drop offs will not be permitted. There is a limit of five monitors and/or televisions per vehicle and once the trucks are full the event will close. Then the e-waste will head off to be recycled.

We are working with the company by the name of the Midwest electronics recycling this material will be going to Walford where it is dismantled and things are sold from the equipment and if it is in good working order it may be going to a different site.

Events like this one help to keep around 1.2 million tons of material out of Iowa’s landfills each year. For any questions, or to volunteer, for the event in Carroll call Wittry at the Carroll Recycling Center at 712-792-5001.
