School Bus Totaled In Gravel Road Intersection Collision

At approximately 12:11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, the Greene County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of I Avenue and 280th Street, southeast of Scranton. An empty Greene County Community School District bus, driven by 40-year-old Toresa Michelle Beyers of Churdan, was eastbound on 280th Street and entering the gravel-road intersection with I Avenue when she was struck by a north-bound semi-tractor/grain trailer driven by 33-year-old Matthew Joe Hofbauer of Coon Rapids. The impact pushed the bus into the northeast corner of the intersection, flipping it onto the driver’s side. Beyers was able to escape the vehicle through the top hatch. The semi-tractor/grain trailer, owned by Gary Fell of Bayard, also entered the northeast corner of the intersection and struck a tree before coming to rest near the bus. No injuries were reported but the 2007 school bus was estimated to be a total loss and there was $15,000 in damage to the 1995 Peterbuilt. Hofbauer was cited for No Valid Commercial Driver’s License and Driving While Under Suspension. Beyers was cited for Failure to Yield to a Vehicle on the Right.
