As new ads are being launched that urge candidates to support renewable fuels for the future of the country, GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum is saying he has been one of the few Republican supporters of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), as far back as his tenure as a US Senator for the state of Pennsylvania.

The nation was engaged in the Gulf War at that time and he had grave concerns then about our ability to produce energy if necessary. He holds those same concerns today.

Santorum believes the RFS is a good policy for domestic production of a renewable resource. He said since the fuel industry is a vertically-integrated market owned by the oil companies, they all want their product at the retail level. They are certainly not interested in bringing in competitive fuels. He adds that of the 13 other Republican Presidential candidates, he is separating himself from the competition with his long-term support.

There are still others, he said, who are asserting they support the RFS for now, but then again, they are running for President in Iowa.
