UV system bids rejected; Lake View explores new options at waste water plant

Since late 2014 the city of Lake View has planned to install an ultra violet disinfection system as part of a two-phase upgrade at the city’s waste water treatment plant. An estimated cost for the UV system was expected to come in at around $400,000, but at Monday night’s city council meeting, City Clerk Scott Peterson says, two submitted bids came in much higher than expected.

Both bids were rejected leaving city officials to explore other types of treatment options.

The Iowa DNR’s deadline for the installation of the UV disinfection system is May of 2017. However, with the unforeseen setback Peterson says the DNR has been receptive about extending the timeline; as long as the city is making progress on the project’s second phase.

Given the stumbling block city officials will analyze their options before moving forward with any firm decisions. The first of four annual 12.5% increases to city sewer rates is still set to begin March 1st in order to build capital and pay for the large scale improvement projects at the waste water treatment plant.
