Deputy Smaldone Brings Public Service Background To Carroll County Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Andrew Smaldone became the newest member of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office yesterday (Monday), and said his first day on the job went beyond what he had initially expected.

Smaldone has been in the Carroll area for the past 10 years, having come here for his post-secondary education. He met his wife of two years, Ema (Berger), while attending college and has been here ever since. Though over the past four years he has worked at Earl May, Smaldone said he had been wanting to get into law enforcement for a long time. He put in an application and kept after it, and though he hasn’t had any official law enforcement training, he is accustomed to the role of public servant.

The 29 year old says his fire department training, his business background and a fresh mind with a willingness to learn are some of the strongest attributes he will be bringing to the position. Smaldone expects that his training schedule will be quite rigorous, with a lot of hands-on activities, paperwork and acclimation to firearms; but it is readily apparent to anyone meeting him in this new role that he is excited to become a member of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

Smaldone will also be attending the law enforcement academy in the near future; but a timeline for that portion of his training has yet to be developed.
