On Monday afternoon at approximately 3:38 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a four-vehicle accident on Highway 71 north of Carroll at 170th Street. A 2004 Saturn Ion, driven by 17-year-old Evan Michael Schettler of Breda was stopped with a turn signal on, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear to make a turn onto 170th Street. A 2010 Chevrolet K2500HD (Heavy Duty) truck, driven by 49-year-old Douglas Wilbert Ehlers of Westside, did not notice the stopped Saturn until it was too late and took evasive action by driving to the right to avoid contact. A 2001 Chrysler Town and Country van, driven by 29-year-old Christine Marie Shipman of Auburn, was behind the Ehlers vehicle and was braking to stop when she was struck from behind by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 18-year-old Amber Lee Krusenstjerna of Wall Lake. This collision caused the Shipman van to be pushed into the right rear of the Schettler Saturn. Shipman complained of possible injuries, but was not transported for treatment and all other parties reported no injuries. There was an estimated $8,000 in damage to the Shipman van, $3,500 damage to the Krusenstjerna truck, $1,000 in damage to the Schettler Saturn and no damage to the Ehlers truck. Krusenstjerna was cited for being Unable to Stop within the Assured Clear Distance Ahead.
