New security features to be installed at Audubon School buildings

For years the front doors at both buildings in the Audubon Community School district have been kept unlocked; allowing visitors to freely enter the buildings near the front offices. Superintendent Bret Gibbs says the district may be one of the few left in the state which doesn’t require visitors to buzz in to gain access to the building, but that will change this fall.

Feld Security will install locking mechanisms to the existing front doors in the vestibules at both buildings for around $44,000. Those doors will then be locked during school hours and will require both students and visitors to buzz in. Another security upgrade, which might push the costs closer to $60,000, is the installation of new and additional HD cameras at the 5th through 12th grade building.

With all the new safety features Gibbs says the buildings will be more secure, but he doesn’t want people to get a false sense of security.

The new systems will be installed this summer.
