The Carroll County Solid Waste Management Commission is offering all Carroll County homeowners the chance to pick up compost for their flower beds or vegetable gardens free of charge this Friday, April 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. Director, Mary Wittry, said the commission became part of a continuous improvement program and was designated an Environmental Management System in 2014, which gives them the opportunity to tie in with the yard waste collection component to offer the free compost. They accept grass and leaves from residents free of charge. These are then ground up and placed on a pile, which is turned on a regular basis. Eventually, the pile looks like black dirt and is returned to residents for use in the gardens and seeding projects. Participants will weigh their vehicle on the scale at the recycling center, fill out a brief survey, pick up their compost at the designated area of the landfill, then return to the recycling center to weigh again. The compost is not bagged and will be loaded into a pickup or trailer with a skid loader. Wittry said this is done on a first-come, first-serve basis until the compost is gone.
