In May of 1995, there was a “tornado outbreak” between May 6 and May 27 that spawned nearly 300 tornadoes, killing 13 individuals from across the Central United States through the Southeast and into the Mid-Atlantic States. Of the 279 total reported, four of these were F4s. It is believed that the last outbreak of the month on the 27th that traveled through Carroll, Greene, Adair, Guthrie, Sac and Union Counties carried ratings of F3 or F4 with winds from 158 to 260 miles per hour. The strongest of the tornadoes on that day were reported near Mount Carmel, Carroll, Coon Rapids and Churdan. Miraculously, no deaths occurred during these storms, but in total, the region suffered over $8 million in damages.
