Multi-State Historical Landmark Plans Unveiled This Week

This Friday, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will unveil a master plan for Blood Run National Historic Landmark in northwest Iowa. The centerpiece for their proposal is to create one of the country’s few bi-state parks in Iowa and South Dakota. Blood Run Historic Landmark is located in Lyon County. The area between the Big Sioux River and Blood Run Creek is the largest known and most complex site of the Oneota cultural tradition, which was practiced here by the Omaha/Ponca, Ioway and Otoe tribes from around 1500 until the early 1700s. This is considered a very spiritual place and a significant archeological site. A public meeting to reveal the master plan will begin with a tour from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, July 15. Those interested in attending should meet at 9:45 a.m. at Granite Mercantile in Larchwood for a hay-rack ride to the site. Following the tour, Quinn Evans Architects will present the plan from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Grand Falls Casino Resort in Larchwood.
