At approximately 9:05 p.m. on Friday, July 8, the Iowa State Patrol reported to the scene of a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 near the north end of the US 59 overlap. Forty-seven-year-old Danny Joe Loggins of Sioux City was southbound on I29 in a 1999 Western Star 4900 semi-tractor trailer owned by Bailey’s, Inc., when he fell asleep at the wheel. The semi drifted off the roadway onto the median on the east side before he awoke. Loggins was unable to regain control of the vehicle, and it continued into the median where it struck a guardrail, then the trailer hit the bridge support pillar, causing the tank on the trailer to rupture. The semi continued south down the guardrail until it rolled, coming to rest in the median on its left side. Loggins was transported to Missouri Valley Hospital by Missouri Valley Rescue for treatment of possible injuries. There was an estimated $45,000 damage to the semi-tractor and trailer and $5,000 in damage to the guardrail. Loggins was cited for failure to maintain control.
