Iowa Soybean Association Puts Support Behind Contentious Pork Processing Plant

The Iowa Soybean Association (I-S-A) has placed their support behind the proposed Prestage pork processing facility in Wright County today. The support of the ISA stems from an assessment they performed that coincided with a public hearing hosted today (Monday) by the Wright County Board of Supervisors. The ISA believes that this type of project helps insulate the state from steep job cuts resulting from a turbulent national economy. ISA member Dean Coleman of Humboldt, who attended and spoke at the hearing, said, “The vast number of comments were in support of the project. The plan put forth by Prestage and county leaders is well thought out.” He went on to say, “Pork is our number 1 customer and a domestic one at that. Projects like this one being proposed for Wright County are a win-win for communities, farmers, and everyone who relies on an economy that’s working and producing.” The proposed $240 million plant will be located five miles south of Eagle Grove on Highway 17. According to Prestage, the facility will employ 922 workers at an average wage of $15.75/hour. The Wright County Board of Supervisors will be holding another hearing on the plant on Monday, Aug. 1.
