On July 7, 2014, 38-year-old Steve Thomas Schneider of Carroll was found guilty by a jury of his peers and sentenced to 40 years in prison for having a sexual relationship with his 14-year-old niece in early 2009. After the convictions were upheld in a July, 2015 appeal, Schneider sought postconviction relief through the courts and received a partial summary judgment on June 9 of this year. His convictions on six counts of sexual abuse in the third degree, however, were upheld in that appeal. His case was then brought before the Iowa Supreme Court late last month, and was again denied. The ruling dismisses the merit of the case, saying that Schneider’s appeal on the basis that dates in the initial trial were amended are not elements of the offenses he committed. The exact time and date of the crimes does not change the fact that the crimes were committed during that time frame.
