Carroll County crews have been working hard at assisting with contract hauling of gravel to build up their stockpiles, particularly those at Carroll and Templeton. Supervisors previously approved entering into a contract with an individual who works on hauling for Stratford Gravel to haul their allotment of approximately 33,000 tons at Hallet Material’s Boyer pit. The plan was to bring 15,000 tons to Templeton, 10,000 tons into Carroll, leaving 8,000 tons to haul onto roadways. County Engineer, Dave Paulson, said they were looking at a flat per ton/per mile rate for the contract hauling.
Recently, Troy Schon, owner of TLS Transport of Carroll, asked supervisors about possible future consideration of hiring local businesses to assist with contract hauling.
Schon made a special request to the Carroll County Board of Supervisors to consider drawing up a list of local haulers and to place him on that list for the opportunity to work with them when the need arises.
The majority of projects that have been completed in the past, according to Supervisor Chair Neil Bock, have been put out to bid and using contract hauling is a rare occurrence for the county. He added, generally, local contractors have been given the chance to bid on those projects.
Bock, along with all the other supervisors, agreed, however, that if there is something they can do to work with local providers, they need to be doing it. Paulson will be checking in with Crawford County Engineer, Paul Assman, to find out more about how they manage their list of local contractors and if they are still offering a rate at 17-and-a-half centers per ton/per mile.
