The holiday season is here and that means many area organizations are starting off food, toy and clothing drives to help families in need, but the Carroll Public Library is holding a different kind of program this year. The Reading Tree Project seeks to increase literacy in youth by collecting books to pass on to families in need this holiday season. Children’s Librarian, Diane Tracy, says even if you cannot pick out a book there are other ways to help.
Tags can be picked up from the tree in front of the library’s circulation desk that specifies the age and gender of a child in need of a book. Tracy says they have not left a tag unfilled in the two previous years.
She says a local business owner told her some kids helping the project are more excited about giving a book than receiving one.
Books donated to the Reading Tree must be hardcover, gift-wrapped and have the tag attached when returned. Donations are due to the Carroll Public Library by 8 p.m on Thursday, Dec. 15
