Just last fall, Brandon Vonnahme made a bid for and won the at-large seat on the Carroll City Council in the November election. At Monday night’s council meeting, he made an announcement that brought an end to his brief career as a council member.
Vonnahme, who grew up in Carroll, returned to his hometown shortly after graduating college. He said he and his wife, Theresa, wanted nothing more than to raise their four children in Carroll. After announcing his resignation, Vonnahme said he is thankful, not only for what he has learned by being a council member, but also for the chance to meet and work with so many individuals.
Vonnahme will be closing on his new residence on Dec. 15, and must resign his seat on that date. City Manager, Michel Pogge-Weaver, has said the council has not yet decided how they would like to proceed with filling the at-large position. According to the Secretary of State, filling a vacancy on a city council can be done by appointment or by calling for a special election. If the council chooses to fill the vacancy by appointment, they must do so within 60 days of the vacancy and will have to publish notice of their intention to appoint a council member at least four days before the appointment is to occur. They must also notify residents of their right to request a special election through the filing of a petition.
