Carroll High School (CHS) is holding a drone building seminar for some of their students in the STEM Training and Research (STAR) class this coming weekend. CHS makes tremendous efforts to engage students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields and will bring in Dr. Mark Miner, an ER physician and drone enthusiast, to assist with the seminar. Angie Emerick and Kent Muyskens, instructors at CHS, already spent an afternoon with Miner building a drone and are excited to pass on the knowledge. Emerick says some wonder why the school is sponsoring drone building classes for students.
Building a drone is not cheap with each drone potentially costing nearly $500. The CHS Foundation volunteered to assist by donating nearly $3,000 to cover the costs of materials and Miner’s instructor fees. The CCSD mission statement is ‘Opening the doors of Learning for Success’, and Emerick says programs like this fulfill that goal.
Only students enrolled in the STAR class at CHS will be able to attend the seminar on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the high school. If necessary, a follow up seminar will take place the following Saturday, Dec. 10. About five students are registered to build their own drones.
