Farmers in the Wall Lake Inlet and Black Hawk Lake watersheds are eligible to apply for conservation assistance through the USDA’s National Water Quality Initiative. Farming practices that will be eligible for water quality improvement financial assistance include cover crops, grassed waterways, prescribed grazing, livestock facilities and nutrient management. The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) administers the initiative, offering higher than normal payment rates for implementation of any of these practices. The producers in parts of Sac and Carroll Counties that have land in these watersheds, can contact their local NRCS for more information, or they can log on to their website at www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov for more information.
