The Carroll City Council has been busy working on the budget for fiscal year 2018. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, said they spent nearly six hours in two work sessions studying, discussing and making changes to the budget book.
Pogge-Weaver said the council will set the public hearing on the budget at their next scheduled meeting on Monday, Feb. 13. He said he is expecting the public hearing will take place on March 13. There were really no unusual requests that came in for this year’s budget, but Pogge-Weaver said the council got some insight into issues that have arisen with the Carroll Area Child Care Center and Preschool in recruiting and retaining employees.
The council heard from the daycare representatives that they had hired 42 new staff members in 2016 and 21 of those positions have already turned over. That is a huge attrition rate for a small agency like that, Pogge-Weaver said. He also talked about the major projects that have been included in the next fiscal year budget.
Once the council’s changes have been made to the document, the budget book will be available to the public for review. Pogge-Weaver said it is important for citizens of Carroll to take an interest in one of the major policy documents for the city. It is essential to the process that questions, concerns and ideas be addressed and implemented if necessary.
