Supervisors Approve Paving Sauk Rail Trail 170th Street Road Crossing

Carroll County Engineer, Dave Paulson, and Carroll County Conservation Director, Jason Christensen, presented a proposal to the board of supervisors to pave the 170th Street road crossing on the Sauk Rail Trail northwest of Maple River. Christensen said he was able to come up with $10,000 to cover material costs. Paulson said his crew would come in to help with the labor.

Because of the extreme angle, the crossing is relatively long, about 105 to 110 feet, and would require 20 feet of finished area on either side of the trail crossing. The plan is to do the project this summer, but Paulson said 170th would need to be closed until the concrete was cured enough to handle traffic.

Christensen has calculated the cost based on nine-inch thick concrete with re-bar figured in if needed. Paulsen said this is right in line with a paved road, which they would do at eight inches. Paulsen and Christensen looked at work being done in Greene County last fall, and Christensen told the supervisors the only way they can make the money stretch to fit is by working as a team.

The supervisors approved this project and are hoping to be able to move forward with paving more Sauk Rail Trail crossings in the near future.
