In nearly four out of five countries in the world, insects are a part of people’s diets, and the opportunity to learn more about bugs as a food source is coming to the Sac County Conservation Building in Hagge Park near Sac City. Sac County Conservation Naturalist, Megan Cook, says the western world is one of the few places that bugs are not eaten regularly.
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, Cook will be exploring the history of eating insects, called entomophagy, and the role it plays in keeping our growing population fed. Attendees will have a chance to try some bugs for themselves. She says the insects come from a reputable source and are safe to eat.
Raising insects for food require less land, feed and water than more traditional livestock, and it is possible they may become a more common source of food in the future. There is no cost to attend the program, but attendance is limited to 20 participants.
