Danner’s Request For Variance Denied

A Carroll farmer’s request for a zoning variance was denied last night (Thursday), at the Board of Adjustment meeting. Loren Danner had requested the variance on a grain leg constructed in 2013 that was later found to be intruding about 61 feet into the protected airspace of the Carroll Airport. Greg Seimann, a member of the Carroll Airport Commission, says the leg violates two ordinances within the Airport Protection Plan adopted by the county in 1978. Danner received approval from the county for the structure in January of 2013, and says the current cost to bring the structure under the height threshold would cost him over $400,000. The board told Danner that the rules for approval of a variance say it cannot be granted based on financial hardships or concerns. Board members Brian Hoffman, Linda Shroeder and Janice Hulsing all voted in favor of denying the variance and Dave Wittrock voted against the denial. Danner can appeal the decision within 30 days and has already expressed his intention to do so. The Carroll Airport Commission has named Danner as a defendant in a lawsuit scheduled for court Tuesday, March 14. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more from the meeting in an upcoming broadcast.
