The Coon Rapids Police Department has announced the hiring of a new police chief to take the helm after longtime Police Chief, Joel Roetman, retires at the end of June. Iowa State Patrol Trooper, Andy Klein, begins work at the department soon at the assistant police chief role as he become acquainted with the town for several months. He graduated with bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Grand View University in 2009 and joined the State Patrol in 2006, working in the Capitol Complex in Des Moines. Being from Fairview, he says switching from an urban area to a more rural one should be an easy adjustment.

Klein’s first actions with the department will be to fill the vacant patrol officer spot on the force after he officially begins.

The city hopes to have an offer accepted by the end of March. Both he and the hired officer will be new additions to the area, and Klein says this will allow for the small force to build relationships.
