Carroll County’s Newest Deputy Brings Healthcare Skills To Her New Career

The newest Deputy at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Sadie Caldwell, spent the majority of her younger years in Waterloo and La Porte City, but leaving home to attend Morningside College on a swimming scholarship and then transferring to Western Iowa Tech Community College led her to the west central part of the state. It is the training she received during her college years that landed her the first job as a paramedic with Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison in 2015. From there she transferred to Carroll County Emergency Medical Services. Caldwell says her medical training is something she sees as playing a key role in her new position as a deputy.

Caldwell is in her first week with the Sheriff’s Office and says this is something she has wanted for the majority of her life.

So far, she said, like any new career, there are some things that are expected and some things that aren’t. She has been surprised at the behind-the-scenes work that goes on with the court system, jail, serving of papers and like duties. She said it is even an adjustment to get used to the estimated 25 extra pounds that comes along with the new uniform.

Caldwell says her training will continue with 16 weeks at the Law Enforcement Academy beginning in May and more ride-alongs and hands-on training when she returns. She is really looking forward to bringing a new twist and blend to the department with her healthcare experience and she is excited to get out and do more. She says that even though a career in law enforcement can be dangerous in this day-and-age, she has the full support of her family and her fiancé, Jared Hansen.

Caldwell says she is here to help people and wants them to feel comfortable approaching her, and that she can’t wait to get out and serve the people of Carroll County. She has just recently bought a home in Carroll and is planning a wedding for the spring of 2018. Caldwell is filling a vacancy left open with the resignation of Deputy Sam Hansen in March.
