Greene County Schedules Drug Take Back Day

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at 204 South Chestnut Street in Jefferson. For the 13th time in seven years, the Drug Take Back Day, in a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), will help prevent abuse of prescription medications by helping residents rid their homes of dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted items. This is a free and anonymous service, but no liquids, needles or sharps will be accepted, only pills and patches. Prescription drug abuse is rising at alarming rates and studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Americans are also now being advised that their usual methods of disposal—flushing down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—pose both potential safety and health hazards. For more information on the April 29 Take Back Day, you can contact Greene County Sheriff, Jack Williams at 515-386-2136, or log on to the DEA website by following the link included with this story on our website.
