Several local Hawkeye fans were recognized for their steadfast support of the University of Iowa (UI) as “Hawks of the Year” during the 2017 Carroll Area I-Club Banquet Wednesday night. Mike Franey, of Carroll, Bill Stork, of Lidderdale, and Bill and Carrie Wenger, of Scranton, were chosen based on a number of criteria set by the organization’s steering committee. Franey, a long-time I-Club member, says all the recipients were excited to be named but noted how fortunate area fans are to have a club like this.
The I-Club took home that top honor in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Attendees had the opportunity to spend time with coaches and staff during the banquet, including: Men’s Basketball Coach, Fran McCaffery; Wrestling Coach, Tom Brands; Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach, Jan Jenson; The Voice of the Hawkeys, Gary Dolphin; and former Kuemper football player and current Hawkeye, Sam Brincks. The Carroll Area I-Club remains one of the most active chapters in the state, and Franey says the university appreciates that effort.
The Carroll Area I-Club consistently supports the school through monetary donations and hosting group trips to Hawkeye athletic events. Carroll Broadcasting has reached out to the other honorees and will bring you more from them in upcoming broadcasts.
