Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) in Lake City has announced a change to their Board of Directors with the retirement of Deb Lightner. Lightner has served 12 years on the board and says, “One area I am most proud of is the shift in culture at SMCH. The board supported, encouraged and participated in efforts to elevate the hospital from good to great.” Another highlight for Lightner is the benefits they gained through their partnership with UnityPoint. Sheila Berger of Lohrville will fill the seat left open by Lightner’s retirement. Berger has been affiliated with SMCH for over 30 years, having attended the very first volunteer training for the hospice program, where she continues to serve today. She also volunteers to help area children by working as a court appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteer. Berger has received a Length of Service Award by the Iowa Child Advocacy Board, and in 2013, the Governor’s Volunteer Award. She says she is eager to learn more about how her past experiences can help SMCH continue to be successful and that she is honored to be a part of the board. “The hospital is a big asset to the region,” Berger says, “and it benefits so many people. Whether it’s for health care, employment or a service, the impact SMCH has is tremendous.”
