Coon Rapids Opts For Seven-Day Trial Period For Fireworks Before Changing City Code

The Coon Rapids City Council has approved the use of first- and second-class consumer fireworks within city limits but will be differing from the state’s permitted times. In Iowa, fireworks are allowed to be used from June 1 to July 8 and from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3. Coon Rapids’ city ordinance currently bars their use in city limits. City Clerk, Jes Leighty, says fireworks will be allowed for a week before a final decision is made.

Beginning Saturday, July 1 to Thursday, July 8 fireworks can be used within city limits from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sales of fireworks will have no additional restrictions beyond State law within the city. Leighty says they have not had any individuals or companies apply for permits to set up sales.

Depending on the success of the trial period, the city may change ordinances to match State law. Incidents such as fire, injury or community disruption will play a factor in how the council will determine the future of fireworks within Coon Rapids.
