Carroll Man Pulled From Lake Michigan Uninjured After Boat Capsizes During Race

Four men were rescued from the waters of Lake Michigan early Sunday morning after their vessel capsized during a 300 mile race. One of the men rescued, Jeremy Rierson, is from Carroll. Rierson, told his wife, Sondra, the boat rolled over due to high winds at about 12:20 a.m.

The three other men on the boat were Rierson’s brother, the boat’s owner and a sailor from Florida. They were all experienced operating sailors and were competing in the annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The boat capsized about 30 miles east of Fox Point, Wis., and its occupants were found by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, Biscayne Bay, and a Waukegan MH-65 helicopter. Rierson says they made it out of the situation without injuries.

She laughed and added her husband will not be giving up sailing anytime soon, but it might be a few years before he signs up for a race like that again. Two of the four men saved were wearing life-jackets at the time of their rescue. By Monday, an estimated 85 other competitors in the race had unofficially withdrawn due to unfavorable conditions. One other person needed to be rescued Sunday morning due to the high winds.
