The Lake City City Council is in discussions with a home buying organization to pursue an agreement to purchase and develop derelict properties in town. A firm from Papillion, NE., Homebuyers, Inc., sent a representative to town on Friday, July 21 to examine two houses the city controls to determine the company’s interest in pursuing an investment. City Administrator, Eric Wood, says it will not be long before the properties get cleaned up.
No official contracts have been made yet. Lake City has been actively pursuing derelict property owners to abate their nuisances. When owners repeatedly fail to comply, the city makes an attempt to take possession of the lot through the court system. Wood says all that effort is advantageous for the public.
If new homes do end up being built, the city will see an increase to their tax revenues and encourage individuals and families to make Lake City their home. These continued efforts show the council’s resolve in dealing with derelict properties and improving the community.
