August Whiterock Outdoor Walk Explores Iowa’s Bur Oak Savannas

Whiterock Conservancy is continuing their newest program, Whiterock Outdoor Walks (WOW), with an upcoming event focused on one of the state’s most defining ecosystems. On Friday, Aug. 18, people interested in this opportunity can join Land Conservation Manager, Rob Davis, at 4 p.m. at Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids for an educational stroll.

Most people do not think of Iowa as having savannas. A savanna is classified by the presence of trees, in Whiterock’s case the trees are bur oaks, but the dominant plants are grasses and small brush. Participants can learn all about these ecosystems and can get a glimpse of what much of the region looked like in the past. Davis says people of all fitness levels can join in the walk.

Davis expects the walk to last between 90 minutes and two hours. WOW is provided to the public at no cost as part of Whiterock’s efforts to spread knowledge of Iowa’s ecosystems. The September WOW will feature a tour of the historic Garst Farmstead and the planned renovations to the facility.
