Lake View Citizen Requests Ordinance Change To Allow Horse To Act As Service Animal

The Lake View City Council is reviewing a city ordinance barring livestock in town after a citizen requested a change in order to use miniature horses as service animals. City Administrator, Scott Peterson, says the request was unusual, but he can see its merits.

Under previous Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards, only dogs were considered approved service animals. That changed in 2011 when miniature horses were added to the list. Peterson says city code would make it complicated for horses to live within city limits.

The citizen asked for anonymity during discussion of the issue. The council indicated they are willing to make changes to their ordinance and comply with ADA regulations. Peterson says they do have some concerns regarding a change.

The council did not take any action on the matter and requested more information before altering the ordinance at a future meeting. The Lake View City Council meets next on Monday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Lake View Municipal Building.
