Suspect In Sept. 3 Murder In Fort Dodge Apprehended This Morning

The Fort Dodge Police Department has announced the arrest of 27-year-old Levi Gibbs III of Fort Dodge for murder in the first degree. During an investigation into the Sept. 3 shooting of 32-year-old Shane Wessels of Fort Dodge, the department received information from several different people about Gibbs’ possible location. In collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, Gibbs was taken into custody early this morning (Monday) in Des Moines. He has been booked into the Polk County jail where he is awaiting extradition to Webster County. The Fort Dodge Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are continuing to follow up on leads in the case. The Waterloo and Des Moines Police Department and the U.S. Marshals assisted in the search. Gibbs was identified as the suspect in an altercation at approximately 3:31 a.m. at 10th Ave. SW and 10th Street SW on Sept. 3. Officers responded after several residents called about a man lying in the street to find Wessels had suffered a gunshot wound. He later died at a Fort Dodge Hospital.
