A nurse anesthetist found guilty of stealing painkillers from Manning Regional Healthcare Center has agreed to voluntarily surrender his controlled substances registration. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has ordered 52-year-old David Michael Anderson, of Boone, to no longer prescribe or administer controlled substances unless his registration, which is required to handle drugs regulated by the state and federal governments, is reinstated. Anderson may request reinstatement after one year, but he must prove the basis of the revocation no longer exists and it is in the public interest for his registration to be restored. The revocation stems from a class C felony prohibited acts conviction against Anderson in August for stealing powerful opioid painkillers, primarily fentanyl, from Dec. 14, 2016 through March 8, 2017. No evidence presented indicates any patients were harmed in that theft. Anderson was sentenced to 10 months in prison and $1,000 in fines after agreeing to a plea deal on the charge.
