An electrical pole fell across Highway 30 near Arcadia on Thursday afternoon as the result of a two-vehicle accident. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at the intersection of Highway 30 and Division Street at approximately 5:42 p.m. The initial investigation revealed that a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 15-year-old Lucas Norman Smith of Arcadia, was eastbound on 30, but stopped preparing to turn left onto Division. Smith told the deputy that there was a gap in traffic, but he misjudged the distance. This caused him to hit the front driver side of a westbound 2005 Toyota Prius, driven by 64-year-old Jose Vazquez Rubio of Denison. Vazquez Rubio braked, skidding into the ditch and striking the electrical pole that was knocked down across the highway. Vazquez Rubio reported possible minor injuries, but was not transported for treatment. Smith was uninjured. There was an estimated $7,000 in damage to the Prius and $5,000 to the Impala. Smith has been cited for failure to yield upon a left turn.
