SCC Bringing Facility Improvement In Rockwell City And Lake City To Public Vote Next Spring

The South Central Calhoun (SCC) Community School District Board of Directors has recently made the decision to move forward with facility improvements. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says they are focusing on two building projects that will be funded by a voter Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL), and he describes what work is proposed.

Kruse says the improvements to student support spaces are to help the district meet the needs of all students.

The work on the Rockwell City building and the update to the locker rooms at the Lake City High School were actually chosen by the people of the district. The board had been exploring projects for quite some time, but an online survey revealed that the highest need seen by their communities was in those two areas. Kruse says the estimated cost coming in from FEH Design is around $5 million, and the board has passed a resolution on the PPEL vote.

Kruse adds the reason the board chose a voter PPEL with a property tax is because they cannot borrow against an income surtax. Anyone who resides within the South Central Calhoun school district is eligible to vote in this special election. There have been some preliminary meetings held already to discuss the proposed referendum. There will be additional informational public meetings to be held in the majority of the communities serviced by South Central Calhoun in the near future.
