Residents in the Jefferson area are advised to keep an eye on their credit card statements after a card skimmer was located at a local gas station Monday morning. At approximately 9 a.m., an employee located the skimmer inside one of their gas pumps. The Jefferson Police Department was contacted, and the approximately nine-inch device was removed. It will be sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for additional forensic testing. Skimmers are placed on equipment like gas station pumps and card readers at checkouts by criminals. They illegally acquire information about your credit card when consumers attempt to pay for their purchases. In this instance, the skimmer was installed by opening the front of the pump and then attached inside. Every gas pump should have a “Sealed” sticker near the card slot. If you notice one that appears to be tampered with, contact the store’s manager and your local law enforcement.
