Wastewater Discharge Into Storm Lake Ends Tuesday Morning

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports the ongoing wastewater discharge into Storm Lake has ceased. Workers from the city placed a sleeve Monday night over a portion of a sewer pipe that was damaged during routine work near King’s Pointe Resort on Storm Lake’s northeastern shore Friday. A smaller hole appeared shortly after the sleeve was placed and was successfully repaired Tuesday morning. The DNR estimates up to 500 gallons per minute of untreated residential wastewater had been flowing into the lake over the weekend. DNR Supervisor, Ken Hessenius, says, “The discharge will likely have a limited impact on water quality, although a local sag in dissolved oxygen could occur near the resort.” He notes anglers can safely consume any fish caught in the area but advises they should be rinsed thoroughly to remove any bacteria. The DNR is recommending people avoid areas of thin ice and open water near the resort due to concerns about ice stability. An engineer will evaluate the damaged sewer line and make recommendations for a more permanent fix. The DNR will continue to monitor progress and follow up with Storm Lake officials until repairs are final.
