The State Fire Marshal’s Office is advising property owners that a new rule may require the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in their buildings. In 2016, the Iowa Legislature enacted Senate File 2219, which involves the implementation of these devices in certain single-family and residential buildings. The legislation becomes effective on July 1, 2018 and calls for structures with a fuel-fired heater or appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage be fitted with a carbon monoxide alarm. This includes existing single-family dwellings and single/multiple unit residential buildings. Under the new law, it is also mandatory for new rental units constructed after July 1 to have such a device installed. The State Fire Marshal is authorized to enforce penalties for structures that are not in compliance and allows for the creation of an inspection program. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4,000 Americans are hospitalized every year due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
