Storms Rake Through Area Thursday Toppling Semis And Trees

Storms swept through Iowa late Thursday morning and into the afternoon with some areas seeing winds of up to 80 miles per hour or more. Tree limbs fell, and in some instances, whole trees toppled as the storms raked through an area to the south of Carroll. Emergency sirens were activated in Walnut because of the high winds, two semis on Interstate 80 were blown over and portion of Highway 59 near Avoca was blocked by a fallen tree. Wind speeds were recorded at 57 miles per hour near Shelby at around 10:25 a.m. and reached 60 miles per hour or more at about 10:45 a.m. near Harlan. Adair reported peak gusts of 62 miles per hour and power was out for a short period of time in Atlantic. Local meteorologists are saying the high temperatures and humidity expected today (Friday) could spark more severe storms across the state. Stay tuned to Carroll Broadcasting for weather updates.
