Early Morning Apartment Fire Starts In Air Conditioning Unit

A fire that originated in an air conditioning unit at a Carroll apartment complex on Tuesday morning resulted in substantial smoke damage, but luckily, little fire damage and no injuries. Carroll Fire Chief, Greg Schreck says the department responded to the report at approximately 1:54 a.m. in the 600 block of East 1st Street. Upon arrival, they found the fire involved one of the two apartments and had initiated in the air conditioner and then spread to the surrounding wood siding, window framing material and a wood deck. The fire also partially ignited a couch that was positioned inside the apartment under the unit. Two occupants were able to exit the apartment without incident. Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour, clearing smoke and checking for any hidden fires or hot spots. Schreck says the building, which is owned by Michel and Janice Weitl, and the contents sustained an estimated $10,000 in damages.
