St. Anthony Regional Hospital has announced an addition to their mental health services, Amy Canuso, D.O. Dr. Canuso is a psychiatrist who focuses on caring for adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She will join another psychiatrist and an advanced registered nurse practitioner on her official first day, Monday, July 23. Dr. Canuso spent the past 12 years serving in the military, where she completed her residency and practiced psychiatry for active duty personnel and their families. Most recently she served at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guam. She has also been deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Marines, finishing her military career as a Lieutenant Commander. “I look forward to my family joining the Carroll community and serving an organization that has made mental health services a priority,” Dr. Canuso says. “I am impressed by the commitment St. Anthony has to maintaining psychiatric services. At a time where many medical networks have cut back on a national scale, St. Anthony has doubled down by expanding their services and expertise.” Dr. Canuso earned her bachelor’s degree in women’s and diversity studies at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and her medical degree from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine. Finding a passion for psychiatry during her clinical rotations, Canuso then began that training with the military, first as an intern and resident at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Calif., and then through a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. Canuso and her husband, Sean, have relocated to Carroll with their two sons, 12-year-old Caeden and nine-year-old Logan. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running, biking and scuba diving.
