Jefferson Authorities Release Name Of Suspect And Details In Handgun Burglary

Jefferson Police have identified the suspect arrested for the theft of two handguns and a safe from a residence in the 500 block of South Wilson Avenue on Aug. 8. The resident of that home contacted authorities to report the burglary and said that in addition to the other three items, an ankle and belt holster were also missing. He also told authorities he believed the burglary had occurred around 2:30 p.m., because he received a text from the suspect who was asking of his whereabouts and was told a GPS locator, “Find a Friend,” had shown that 25-year-old Haley Lynn Brown of Jefferson was at his residence at the time of the burglary. He confronted Brown about two hours later, but she denied having possession of the items. When the ankle holster was seen in the vehicle, Brown assaulted the homeowner and then fled the scene. At approximately 9:34 p.m., she was pulled over by a Jefferson Police Officer and arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. She was transported to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center and her vehicle was taken to the impound lot, where an inventory began, uncovering a smoking device containing residue. A search warrant was obtained and the ankle holster was found along with prescription medications not in the defendant’s name. Brown happened to show up at the impound lot while the vehicle was being searched and she became disorderly with officers at the scene and was again placed under arrest. A search of her cell phone application records and interviews were conducted and a search of her hotel room uncovered more of the stolen items. The firearms were later recovered from an outbuilding in the 1000 block of West Wall Street where they had been hidden. Arrest warrants for Brown have been sought charging her with: third-degree burglary, theft in the second degree and felon in possession of a firearm, all class D felonies; fourth-degree criminal mischief, unlawful possession of prescription drugs and possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, all serious misdemeanors; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. Brown was also on parole at the time these events transpired, and is also being held in the Boone County jail on a parole violation.
