Iowa Historian Seeks Public’s Help In Researching Communities Near Sac County

An Iowa historian is expanding a program on disappearing or abandoned towns in Iowa to include Sac County and the surrounding area and is seeking the public’s help in her research. Rosa Snyder, from Humanities Iowa, travels the state giving presentations called, “Off the Map: Stories of Abandoned and Disappearing Towns Around Iowa,” and wants to extend the exhibit to include towns from the region. Snyder gave a presentation on former communities in west-central and central Iowa to a nearly full house in Wall Lake on April 9 and indicated she wished to include more of western Iowa due to the community’s interest. Snyder will be traveling in Sac County to conduct research in the second week of October, and the Wall Lake Public Library is requesting anyone with original photos or information regarding Grant City, Herring, Leota, Ulmer or Carnarvon to contact them at 712-664-2983 to assist Snyder in her research.
