A local woman is close to reaching 18 gallons of total blood donations after she finishes her appointment this weekend at the Carroll Broadcasting Dracula Drive. Sherry Bolton, of Glidden, made her first donation in 1972 while she was finishing her nursing training. She says donations were regular for her during that time, but she got really serious in 1981 after receiving blood transfusions when her son was born.
Bolton has given blood so many times that she is not sure how many pints she has given. She does know that she is close the 18-gallon mark, which means she has donated more than 140 pints. For perspective, an average adult has about 10 pints in their whole body. When she hits her milestone, she will have reached the equivalent blood volume found in 14 people. Bolton says donating is such an easy task that everybody should do it.
Bolton is also a nurse at the St. Anthony Specialty Clinic, which works in conjunction with the Cancer Center in Carroll. She says many people do not realize how often blood transfusions are needed for their patients there.
Blood is always in demand, from emergency medical situations to regular infusions for patients with chronic conditions, and Bolton encourages eligible donors to sign up and give this weekend. The Carroll Broadcasting Dracula Blood Drive is Saturday, Oct. 20 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Carrollton Centre.
